Why do exes tell lies to keep theirself out of trouble?

From a friend. Her exhusband ually abused their child. He failed a lie det test and now he is sayin she coached the kid. Remember he failed the test. Hes accusin her of being unfit, alcoholic, druggie, etc. Even gone as far making a fake social network profile with her name so he can have proof.
