Is there an program I can use to combine several low-resolution photos of a scene to get one high-res photo?

Some years ago, I heard about a technique that took short clips of grainy video and somehow got very sharp, clear pictures out of them, by aligning the individual images and extrapolating to a higher resolution. Is there software for OS X or Unix that I can do this with, using either short QuickTime clips or several JPEG images?
